*** Editor's Ramble
    by Gary K. Foote, Editor

Hi Everyone,

As you know I have been fighting this year's version of the flu
since just after Christmas. I have received many get well wishes
from eMD readers and would like to thank you all for your
thoughts. My health is slowly returning to normal and I expect
to be able to return to a full work schedule sometime this week.

This issue of the eMD has been assembled between bouts of flu
symptoms and, as such, is a bit less personal than what usually
shows up here. I plan an exceptional issue next week to make up
for this. Hang in there...

I did find some time to create an eMD member's links directory
that is hosted by Feel free to post your
links to this directory. It is there for members to find other
members who offer services and/or products of interest. Here's
the URL:

I also found time to join a program that pays real money for the
time you spend surfing the web. Right now they are paying 50
cents per hour for up to 25 hours per month. Add to that the
fact that you can also get paid for the time spent surfing by
those you refer to the program [and who sign up themselves] and
the earning potential is huge. If you would like to sign up
please use the link below. You will become one of my referrals,
helping to defray the costs associated with publishing the eMD.

    CyberAtlas Article

Yahoo! now accounts for nearly 56 percent of all search engine
referrals, according to statistics compiled by WebSideStory's

*** Link-Box Offers Text-Based Link Exchange

A new Internet advertising service has been created to
take advantage of the increased hit percentages enjoyed
by text-based links. Link-Box,,
claims to be the Internet's first text-based link
exchange service. LinkBox was created in response to
poor performances of banner exchange programs; for example,
a recent study by Linkshare shows that while the number
of banner ads is far more than text links, each
banner produces less than half as many click-throughs.
The conversion rate for text links is 1.54%, while banner
links produce at a rate of 0.81%. Through the Link-Box
exchange system, two credits are earned for every three
impressions delivered.

*** Did E-tailers Really Deliver This Past Holiday Season?

Deloitte & Touche states that with so much focus on
offering products to consumers over the web this holiday
season, many retailers and e-tailers were less prepared
to ensure that their goods ultimately reached their
destinations as promised. Growth in retail-web offerings
has out-paced order fulfillment, including bricks and
mortar facilities and distribution networks. The web's
long-term survivors will ultimately need to adapt a
fulfillment strategy that will include new supply chain
partners and investment in distribution facility networks.

*** Is Targeting Overrated? article

Jaffer Ali, CEO of e-mail newsletter network PennMedia, discusses
targeting on the Internet and asks the question: "Are we seeing a
technological imperative to target when it doesn't even make
economic sense?"

*** New Website Offers Drivers the Chance to
    Make Money in Traffic Jams
    Source: MediaPeak,

JMP Ventures has launched, a new
advertising concept that will allow drivers in metropolitan
areas the chance to earn money by advertising products
and services on the backs of their vehicles. The service,
at, is based upon the ideas of
taxi cab advertisements and car dealer logo placements;
it allows vehicle owners to earn up to $1,000 per month
depending on the number of commuting miles driven per
month. Advertisers pay a fee to have their product, service,
logo, brand, or website address placed on the back of one or
more vehicles. The fee is split between the vehicle owner and will launch on March 1,
2000 in the Phoenix area and will expand to other cities by
the end of 2000.
