*** Editor's Ramble
    by Gary K. Foote, Editor

Hi Everyone,

Finally got my nose out of some very intensive web development
long enough to put out this issue of the eMD. Its a good one
too. Lots of reader comments and two more entries into our
ongoing Web Design and Marketing series.

Take some time this week to visit the eMD Member's Links
Directory, a Member's Resource page to which you can add your own
listings. Use it to find other eMD members with whom you can do
business. Let's pull together as a community and generate some
business for each other every day. List your business right
now...
http://www.homepagetools.com/links/users/emdmemberlinkspage.html

As always, please take the time to visit this issue's sponsors, "
FreeMerchant.com and Weather by E-mail", as it is our advertisers
who keep the eMD a free resource. You may follow links to our
sponsors from their links in each issue of the eMD, or from our
Sponsor Resources web page located at;
http://www.webbers.com/emark/sponsors.html

Finally, please forward this issue of the eMD on to two friends
or business associates and help us build our circulation.

Now let's get marketing...

*** Web Design & Marketing
Part V, More on search engines

First, let me add a bit to last week's section on search
engines. I wanted to include a list of search engines that
I consider to be important, along with links to each's site
submission page, so here they are, in no particular order.

Alta Vista. Submissions appear in their database in 1 to 2
days. AltaVista are included in MSN.

     Alta Vista's "Add URL" page
     http://www.altavista.com/av/content/addurl.htm

AOL Search. Open Directory powers AOL Search web results.

Excite. Submissions appear in their database within 2
weeks. WebCrawler is powered by Excite and submissions to
     Excite are included in WebCrawler.

     Excite "Getting Listed" page
     http://www.excite.com/Info/listing.html

     Excite "Add URL" page.
     http://www.excite.com/Info/add_url.html

Google. Submissions appear in their database in 4 to 6
weeks. Netscape Search is powered by Google. Submit to
Google to be included in Netscape Search.

     Google "Add URL" page.
     http://www.google.com/addurl.html

HotBot. Submissions appear in their database in 2 months.
HotBot submissions also appear in Inktomi and AOL. HotBot
web-crawling results are powered by Inktomi.

     HotBot "Add URL" page.
     http://www.hotbot.com/addurl.asp

Lycos. Submissions appear in their database in 3 to 6
     weeks.

     Lycos "Add Your Site" page.
     http://www.lycos.com/help/yoursite.html

Northern Light. Submissions appear in their database in 2
to 4 weeks. They claim to have 212,076,839 webpages in their
     database.

     Northern Light "Add URL" page.
     http://www.northernlight.com/docs/regurl_help.html

Yahoo. Not technically a search engine, Yahoo is a
directory maintained by real people who look into every
     submission.

Yahoo's "How to Suggest Your Site"
     http://www.yahoo.com/docs/info/include.html

Yahoo's "Finding an Appropriate Category" http://www.yahoo.com/docs/info/appropriate.html

    New Reader from La Maddalena, Sardinia, Italy writes;

I would like to get information to help me understand the how of
the internet workings. I live in a small village on sardinia and
have lovely items of which I feel would be of interest to others.
I just need help in getting them marketed. If you feel your
digest will help in this manor, It would be greatly appreciated.

Editor's Response

Hi Diane,

Welcome to the eMD. One of the great things about the internet
is that it offers people in remote locations the opportunity to
offer their unique products to the world rather than depending on
selling through local outlets alone. If you are in the beginning
stages of offering your items online you are in luck. We are
currently running a series on marketing your website. If your
website is, or will be focused on your products, then a
successfully marketed [and well designed] website will generate
sales.

Marketing series use the following URLs;

*** James Iverson
    New Reader From Illinois, US writes;

My family runs a traditional sales and marketing company. I have
some technical competency, and would like us to do more business
over the internet - business to business. Maybe you can help.

Editor's Response

Hi James,

Welcome to the eMD community. I'm sure you will find at least an
occasional 'diamond' in each issue that will get you thinking
about ways to improve your own online business experience.

Here are a few quick thoughts that might get you started on your
path. Of course being a regular reader of the eMD is certain to
maximize your effectiveness in the online marketplace, eh?

First question - have you defined your target market[s] yet?

Second - Have you researched your competition online? How
big is the marketplace? How fast is it growing? What are
competitors doing to succeed in the search engines?

Third - Do you have a site online yet?

Fourth - Does your plan define how you will use email to its
fullest ethical extent to promote your service online?

Again, welcome aboard, James.

*** Arvella Hayes
     New Reader from Florida, US writes;

We are interested in some type of on line marketing, I think. We
just don't know where to find information, or if it is right for
us. We don't know how to check out companies to see if they are
above board. Could use some help. Thank you Arvella Hayes.

Editor's Response

Hi Arvella,

Welcome aboard the eMarketing Digest. Though your comment is
rather broad overall you do ask a very important question about
finding reputable companies online. The fact is there are lots
of organizations purporting to be the Better Business Bureau of
the internet. Sorting the 'wheat from the chaff' can take time
and there are more effective ways of deciding who is reputable
and who is not.

Even though the internet seems like a huge place the truth is
that it is a very small place in terms of one's prefessional
reputation.

To illustrate this I used the metasearch capabilities at
DogPile.com to search on my own name, Gary K. Foote, just to see
what would come up. I was surprised at the number of returns -
well over 100 - some of which dated as far back as a post I made
to Glenn Fleishmann's pioneering-but-now-defunct Internet
Marketing Discussion list on Fri, 13 Oct 1995, regarding online
contests and contest law.

This shows not only my longevity online -important in judging
someone's depth of internet knowledge - but the lack of anything
negative associated with my name in these search engine returns
also stands as testament to my reputation's good standing online.

The same strategy can be used to research a company online.
Remember, the internet is your greatest tool for exploring and
researching the world - including researching the internet
itself.
