RE: Does banner advertising increase traffic?
by Beth Bressman

The answer is that yes it does. The real question though is does
it drive enough traffic to warrant the cost, is it cost-
effective. And secondarily, what are your other options?

I ran a recent banner campaign on Yahoo for a highly targeted
website--newjerseybride.com. I was told that average click-
throughs could be .25%. We received 56,000 impressions, with as
much targeting as we could--females, in the proper age range,
from NJ--and averaged .65%. (The numbers on the keywords I wanted
were too low to do buy by keyword.)

Did it drive traffic? Yes. Was it cost effective? Sort of, but
that was partly my "fault" for buying so few impressions--we
could have had the double the number of impressions for only a
few hundred dollars more.

Would I do it again? Yes, and I would buy a larger number of
impressions. Why? First, the out-of-pocket cost was reasonable.
Second, it did bring traffic we wouldn't have otherwise gotten.
And third, for us right now, it is the only viable option.

I chose a portal/search engine for various reasons, but you might
also consider an ad network.

Good luck!

Re: Finding newsgroups, issue #342
by Elizabeth Hostetter

The best place to find newsgroups is at Liszt.com:
http://www.liszt.com/news/. You can plug a topic into the search
engine
and it will produce a list of related newsgroups.

Re:Marketing a Local Portal
by Yolanda Lenyon

Fabiola,

I would suggest you connect with other local portal webmasters to
get their perspectives and experiences marketing a local portal.
I moderate a discussion list called the MostlyLocal Area
Webmasters List which a forum for local portals and community
pages. Most of our members are from the US and Canada, but many
of the issues of running a local portal are the same across
localities.

Re: Going Global
by Jorge Enderica

This response is for Nancy Stumbaugh

Dear Nancy:

The cheapest and most effective way to drive traffic to your
website is through the search engines and directories like Yahoo,
Altavista, Excite...

I noticed that your home page is not designed to be indexed by
the search engines. To get an idea of how this works I suggest
you go to www.searchenginewatch.com. This site will provide you
with a good insight on how the search engines work and what you
need to do to get your pages indexed by them.

As to how you can market your designs without getting into the
manufacturing of products. I think you should look into the way
Blue Mountain Arts promotes its designs. They offer free greeting
cards from their site. They have built a lot of awareness to
their brand as well as a large base of customer's. They even send
greeting cards with the designs of independent artists which may
be a good opportunity for you. Right now their paper greeting
cards show up at traditional points of sale.

The key is to build awareness for your designs in a creative way,
and build a large customer base. Once you have that, it will be
easier for you to knock on anybody's door to sell them your
designs for their promotional products. Many of your sales will
come from the customer's from your own database.

I hope this helps!

eMarketing Help
by Philip Bone

I wonder how many people out there are as frustrated as I am,
with this whole emarketing situation. I work with a tax
resolution firm called Ameritax.com, which has just acquired a
web presence. We are able to service all fifty states in the US.
We seem to be in the same boat as a lot of your reader, not a lot
of funding when It comes to advertising (emarketing) and the
resources we do have we don't now were to put. I would like to
come up with some sort of a emarketing strategy so we can measure
our results and implement resources where successful. I would
appreciate any information that can be supplied.

Thanks

Philip

Terminology
by Liz

[I'm interested in info about] building traffic and keeping
visitors once they're on my site. Also standard terminology,
since I can't tell the difference between a host, a visitor, a
page view, ad view, page impression, ad impression, etc.
