Why is it business folks are so hung up on traffic? IMHO, and
what retailers in the early days used to judge success is/was how
much **business** did it bring. Many marketeers believe in the
numbers game - the more folks that go through the funnel, the
more comes out at the narrow end. Last year I attended a seminar
where a VP from a leading marketing consulting firm showed this
chart of how many folks you need to throw into the funnel, how
many would fall out, how many would become prospects and how many
would eventually buy (1-3%).

I believe a targeted mail campaign is far more effective. Buy
into the Disney program or iVillage's FamilyPoint program,
whereby they promote your products to highly selected target
audience. Twice that we tested them we had 31% (thirty one) and
34% return (purchases) out of 125,000 piece mailings. Sure the
cost may be higher, but the results are there. Today, you need
to commit to an annual contract which is approx $100,000.

Banner ads are great for an awareness campaign, but I wouldn't
consider them for selling product.

George

Managing eMail Campaigns
by Karen Fegarty

Our company produces a desktop product that allows companies to
create, manage and send email campaigns to their own targeted
lists. I would love to see a comparison of this type of tool
vrs. the submission services that provide the list and will send
for a charge per email.

[Editor's Response]

First, thanks for subscribing to the eMD and becoming a member.
Second, I have just visited your site and have downloaded a copy
for evaluation. Your suggestion of comparing local targeted list
building and management vs. contracted out services is a good
one. Such an evaluation and comparison will offer good value to
all eMD members. It is being prepared for an upcoming issue of
the eMD.

New Member Intro
by Paul Tennant, TNT Solutions, Inc.

Greetings,

TNT Solutions, Inc., is a small corporation based in northeast
Maryland (in the Baltimore area). We've been in business about
two years (since Jan 98), with most of our efforts centered
around the site KidSolutions (http://www.kidsolutions.com), and
the associated ezines KidSolutions and KidQuestions.
KidSolutions and KidQuestions are published twice per week each,
with total circulation around 6,000 readers, and growing.

We have a very specific audience that we're after - parents,
grandparents & professional educators/daycare providers. Most of
our online marketing has centered around opt-in e-mail marketing.
We have had good success with our efforts so far, and will
continue in that area, but are also looking for other cost-
effective advertising methods.

We have no specific questions at this time - we're just exploring
our options and gathering data.

Regards,

Paul Tennant
