Hi Everyone,

Since our last issue much has happened here at Webbers
Communications. One is that I have passed the torch of writing
about email marketing to one of todays foremost email marketing
specialists, Shannon Kinnard, author of Marketing With Email: A
Spam-Free Guide, currently in its second printing at Maximum
Press.  You can find her excellent book at;

http://www.maxpress.com/catalog/email.html

Shannon has agreed to publish a 26 part series for the eMD on
email marketing, based on the theme, 'The ABCs of email
Marketing', as in;

    A is for Attrition
    B is for Brevity
    C is for CAUCE
    D is for Deadlines
    E is for Effectiveness

    ...all the way through

    Z is for Zeal

Expect some good insights and hard knowledge combined to help you
create a solid and successful, ethical marketing program for your
online endeavors during this series.

Thanks, Shannon. You will cover the subject from a much more
knowledgable place than I could, to the benefit of all eMD
members.

As always, please take the time to visit this issue's sponsor,
'Marketing With Email: A Spam-Free Guide', as it is our
advertisers who keep the eMD a free resource. You may follow
links to our sponsors from their links in each issue of the eMD,
or from our Sponsor Resources web page located at;
http://www.webbers.com/emark/sponsors.html

Finally, please forward this issue of the eMD on to your friends
and business associates to help us build our membership.

Now let's get marketing...

GKF, Ed.

A is for Attrition

Attrition is the rate at which you gain or lose subscribers and
it can tell you so much about the quality of your email marketing
program. Pay attention to this rate by doing the following
calculation:

(Number of Unsubscribe Requests/Number of New Subscribe
   Requests) x 100%

For example, if you've got 6 people unsubscribing every day, with
7 new ones subscribing, your attrition rate is at 86%: This rate
tells you that you're not out there marketing yourself very well
and you're not doing a very good job at producing great content.
On the other hand, if you've got 2 people unsubscribing everyday,
and 15 new people subscribing, you're promising content that
people want to sign up for, and you're delivering on that
content. Your attrition rate is 13%... much better!

To lower your attrition rate, remember the importance of
delivering on your promise. For example, if Gary, the excellent
moderator of this list were to suddenly decide that this list
should change it's focus from Marketing to the superiority of the
Fightin' Florida Gators football team, many members would
unsubscribe. (While they are a great football team, it's not why
you're subscribed to this discussion list.)

The goal is to get your attrition number as close to zero as
possible, but remember that attrition is a normal part of running
any email-list. Just keep track of this rate after every message
and use it as a feedback mechanism that lets your audience easily
tell you what they do and don't want to read in your email
publication.

Next week: "B" is for Brevity

P.S. "A" is also for autoresponders, and we'll cover that term
when we get to 'I' for infobots.

Re: I Need Help! [Plastic Surgery Company]

Dear Asha,

Advertising online can be tricky and wasteful especially if you
consider that over the last few years, the click through rate ,
i.e the number of people who have actually 'clicked' on an
advertising message have fallen drastically. Right now, it is
somewhere in the region of 0.5% or so....You could of course
increase your reponse rate with higher targeting filters which
the add serving company could advising you on.

However, my advice would be be to look at e-marketing as a better
equipped tool. No one route is likely to work for you or for
anybody else. It would neccessarily have to be a combination of
methods. Again my advice would be for you to hire the services of
a professional on-line marketer who would guide you through
this..especially since appears to be the first time you are
planning to go online !

take care!

Industry Specific Opt-In Lists
by Simon O'Dwyer

Hi,

We are handling the marketing for a company that sells sludge
dewatering equipment online to engineering contractors in the
wastewater treatment industry worldwide.

In order to drive traffic to the site I feel we need to use an
opt-in list, but where on earth (literally) can we find a B2B
list that is this industry specific???

any help - much appreciated

New Member Intro
by Bhavna Sachdeva

Hi!!!

A boiler plate introduction about who we are:

Brandquiver.com is currently an India centre portal targeting the
advertising and marketing professional. We are a six month baby
and are the first to open up this niche portal. Through the
holding company Brand Dotcom Ltd., we offer brand managers
consultancy services and help them bring their brands online. Our
other services include on-line consumer research and site
development. In short we generally act as the client's web agency
much as an advertising agency handles the off-line world.

Brandquiver.com was our attempt to bring together through a b2b
exchange the various players in this industry. Over the next 2
months, the site would see some major overhauling as we plug is
several missing/ relevant sections. One of our driving needs is
to help companies ( and we have been getting some really serious
requests) through the maze of direct e-mail marketing. I came
across the eMD and thought it would be a good forum to look for
international partners who may be interested in reaching the
Asian markets. Also I am interested in accessing information
about the technology sides of email marketing. tools used,
software etc. where can I look for it ? Any suggestions.

See our online survey for some general statistics - not about
exact dollars spent, but about where people are fousing their
online marketing efforts. At least a good indicator.
